Introduction Early studies on the function and diseases of the heart can be traced to the classical antiquity, with Hippocrates's pioneer anatomical studies setting the stage for future developments (1). However, it took over a millennium for the English physician William Harvey (1578–1657) to set the foundation of cardiology by introducing a daring model for blood circulation in 1628.
