Clark County’s decade-long practice of adjusting gas tax for inflation should continue for another decade before being subject to reapproval by voters, a broad coalition believes. Fuel revenue indexing — often referred to as FRI — adjusts the county’s portion of fuel tax to inflation and has been a major source of funding for roadway projects in Southern Nevada since going into effect in 2014. FRI is currently scheduled to sunset at the end of 2026 unless voters approve an extension next year.

Nevada lawmakers are considering vastly expanding access to  paid family and medical leave, though the proposal faces harsh opposition from business and industry groups. Democratic Assemblymember Selena La Rue Hatch’s Assembly Bill 388 would require private employers with more than 50 workers, as well as all public employers, to provide paid family and medical leave. The bill was heard by the Assembly Committee on Revenue on Wednesday.

Another legislative session brings another swing at reforming Nevada’s seemingly untouchable property tax structure. Among this year’s proposals: Letting voters in 2028 decide whether the taxable value of property should reset when a home is sold. Currently, it does not, meaning the benefits of a depreciation factor and abatements used when calculating property tax stays with a home after it is sold to a new owner.
