    Jeffersonville City Council members deliberated for around two hours at a special meeting Monday before they ultimately voted to stop a fire territory they approved earlier this year. The board voted 5-4 to rescind an ordinance that approved the territory. It would have expanded fire coverage to Jeffersonville, solidified a partnership for coverage to Utica and Utica Township, and included EMS service.

    Jeffersonville City Council members will make a final call next week on whether to stop a recent fire territory some say is not achievable under a new state law. The president of a Utica fire board said the territory is needed to provide sufficient emergency services to the area. The Jeffersonville council and the Utica Township Fire Protection District board officially approved the territory in March, despite challenges that threatened its passage.

    If John Benningfield didn't make a change, he’s pretty sure he would have died. He spent his teens, well into his 30s in and out of Clark County jail, mostly on drug charges. He’d burned his bridges and was homeless. At that point, jail was comfortable; a “vacation from life.” He got food and shelter in jail, and it’s where his friends were. “It was a place where I could get healthy and just to go back out and do it all over again, this vicious cycle,” he said of his drug use.

    As of Monday, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office had taken in 140 people as part of an agreement with the federal government to hold ICE detainees. It comes as President Donald Trump continues to ramp up immigration and deportation efforts in the U.S.The sheriff’s office agreed to serve as a holding facility earlier this year. Officials say the department isn’t making ICE arrests or determining how long people are held; that’s up to the federal government.
