There’s the crackle of a curry leaf, a hit of pepper, and, quite unbidden, a childhood memory: I’m walking home from the fish market with my grandmother, her shielding us from the sun with her flower-patterned umbrella and me swinging a flimsy plastic bag with a few dozen clanging mussels that would become our lunch.
