Carter Johnstone, the 2025 Big West Freshman Field Player of the Year, committed to Vanderbilt baseball in the transfer portal. Johnstone is the younger brother of Logan Johnstone, who committed to transfer to the Commodores on June 21 from Washington State. The younger Johnstone was a First Team All-Big West selection after hitting .344 with 14 doubles, seven home runs and as many walks as strikeouts in 2025. Defensively, all of Johnstone's appearances were at third base in 2025.

With Vanderbilt baseball's season over, a number of the players will head off to play in various summer leagues around the country. In summer ball, players from different schools team up and play over the summer, typically using wood bats. The Commodores have fewer players playing summer ball than normal. Instead, more players are staying back, working on conditioning and taking summer classes.

Vanderbilt baseball has landed several transfer commitments in the offseason but there are still some needs on the roster. The Commodores need outfielders the most. Only Rustan Rigdon and Braden Holcomb played any games in the outfield in 2025 and are currently slated to return, and both of those players could also slot into the infield. Another need is at pitcher, where Vanderbilt needs a proven weekend starter to slot in alongside returners Connor Fennell and Austin Nye.

Former Vanderbilt baseball star pitcher David Price will be inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in February 2026, the College Baseball Foundation announced in a release June 23. Price won SEC Pitcher of the Year in 2007 as well as every major national award − the Dick Howser Trophy, the Golden Spikes Award and the Roger Clemens Award − after he finished 11-1 with a 2.63 ERA. He still holds the Commodores' single-season and career records for strikeouts.

Baxter had not been a hitting coach when he was hired, only a “special assistant” in an MLB org for one year. Esposito has been a hitting coach in the Guardians org (both majors and minors) since 2017

@aria_gerson What’s the difference between this hire and Mike Baxter?

RT @KendallRogers: SCOOP: @VandyBoys is expected to hire former standout player Jason Esposito as its new hitting coach, I'm told. Esposito…
