A crowd of academics and activists gathered outside the F23 building this morning for a press conference to discuss the repressive campaign against pro-Palestine students and staff. Yasmine Johnson, co-convenor of Students For Palestine, opened the press conference by saying, “we’ve seen attacks on freedom of speech and academic freedom”, citing the Campus Access Policy at the University of Sydney which limits the right of students to protest on campus.

Kicking off Friday 8 November is the seventh annual FrogID week hosted by the Australian Museum. This citizen science campaign aims to support frog conservation efforts by producing an annual snapshot of frog calls. Since 2017, this initiative has amassed 1.1 million scientific records which span 38% of the continent. During FrogID week, anyone with a smartphone is encouraged to download the and record frog calls that they hear.

Close reading is like dating. Just when you think you’ve nailed the technique, you find out you’ve been doing it wrong, oh so wrong, upside down, and you have to simply scratch all you’ve learnt and start over. But there’s no rule book. And everyone has different opinions. No two people do it the same and you’re told “every way to approach this is right” but that can’t be true, because your current approach seems to end poorly each time.

In an email to all ANU staff, ANU Vice Chancellor Genevieve Bell requests that staff forgo their expected 2.5% December pay rise under the current Enterprise Arrangement to assist the University to meet their budget shortfall. This change would need to be approved by the majority of staff to go ahead. This is following a directive from the ANU Council to reduce the ANU’s current cost base by $250 million by the end of 2025.

Following the Gaza solidarity encampment’s efforts, USyd committed to forming a working group to investigate their investments and research ties. Though it is impossible to predict how discussions will play out, Honi has dug into the members’ political positions, and previously expressed opinions on Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) schemes, and thoughts on Zionism. These personal positions will inevitably inform negotiations and the group’s conclusions on USyd’s investment policies.

We are counting down the minutes until the Student Journalism Conference, which is foretold to rock the very foundations of this university so hard that a specialist team of seismologists has driven down from Questacon’s Earthquake House to witness it.
