    I was at the top of an escalator last year when I was thrown forward. Someone pressed the ‘emergency stop’ button and the machinery stopped very suddenly, jolting me. Thankfully, I was going up the escalator - but had I been going down, I could have tumbled head first 20 metres. Now, I’m the first to admit I’m a scaredy-cat. I have two anxiety disorders, including generalised anxiety disorder, which means I am scared of everything.

    My beautiful badass daughter turned 14 on Friday. When, at the age of 5, her class were asked by their teacher to explain what made them special individually, she replied, ‘I am special because I almost wasn’t born.’She’s a tough little fighter, but she shouldn’t have had to be. So here is the story of her birth - at least, the details I can remember, because it was 14 years ago. Much as I support the NHS, the care they gave me during my pregnancy was woefully inadequate.

    Early last year, I began writing poetry for the first time. To start with, it was to submit to competitions, but I only managed to get one poem featured in an anthology. I realised, however, that writing poems was deeply cathartic: it allowed me to express all the hurt and pain I had carried with me for years. Here is the poem which made it into the anthology, a lament about my childhood:REGRETIf I had known you were struggling, perhaps I would have been kinder.

    You’re like, ‘Yeah right, Sherine, sure you sleep half the time. This is an exaggeration, isn’t it?’Well yes, but only slightly. Look at this chart from Apple Health showing my sleep duration for the last six months of last year:Hey, at least I get up before 10am. But I also sleep before 10pm sometimes. Hypersomnia is an affliction, and one I’d really like to be rid of, but that would probably mean dying, which is never a good solution. But y’know, it could be worse.
