Two nonprofits in New Orleans are worried about their futures after the U.S. Department of Justice abruptly canceled a federal grant that would have helped them offer support to survivors of violence. The two groups, Beyond Harm and Silence is Violence, were set to receive hundreds of thousands of dollars to aid the work they do intervening in domestic and sexual violence situations and connecting survivors of violence with resources to help them heal and rebuild their lives.
Reproductive health vending machine to open soon

Several local reproductive justice organizations have teamed up to open a vending machine in New Orleans that will carry emergency contraception and condoms. On Saturday (April 12), at Skeeta Hawk Brewery, representatives from the organizations — the Louisiana Abortion Fund, Women with a Vision, the Reproductive Justice Action Collective and the Birthmark Doula Collective — explained a new project they hope will increase access to reproductive health products.

New Orleans activists took to the streets on Tuesday (March 11) to demand the release of an alumnus of Columbia University who was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents over the weekend for leading pro-Palestine protests at Columbia. ICE records show that Mahmoud Khalil, a Syrian-born Palestinian who is a lawful permanent resident of the United States, is being held at the Central Louisiana ICE Processing Center in Jena, about four hours northwest of New Orleans.
