    You know what’s fantastic in terms of design and furniture? When form meets function. I’m a huge fan of that. So when a friend of mine asked me recently if I could help her find a “not totally ugly” recliner sofa, I suited up and got to work. After all, I used to work for a company that sold recliner sofas you’d never be able to tell were just that (though sadly they no longer sell them, so I was back to the drawing board).

    Veneer is like the boob job of the furniture industry. It can look amazingly natural and fool fairly discerning eyes, or it can stick out like a rock-hard and overly perky boob sore thumb. Not to even get started on the “this is cheating” discussion on either topic.

    It’s not often that the words “design trend” and “affordable” go together, but I’m happy to report that today’s post does just that. As a design writer, my eye has been trained to pick up on details in projects that have a common thread from home to home. When I start seeing it enough over several months (sometimes even years), I feel confident in my expertise to call a trend a trend.

    Earlier this year, it was announced that Joann (or Joann Fabrics as I will forever call it), was going out of business and closing its hundreds of stores nationwide. Crafters, sewers and anyone who ever DIYed a Halloween costume two nights before the big day all shed tears. But for real, I’m very sad about this. I grew up being dragged (begrudgling) to Joann with my lifelong sewer of a mother what felt like every week.

    There’s been a ton of chatter in the first few months of 2025 regarding companies either leaning into or pulling away from their diversity, equity and inclusion programs—or DEI—that have been in place at the very least since 2020, but in some cases decades. There have been boycotts both ways, and while there is so much to get into about this specific topic, it’s also quite the mine field that I’m not necessarily an expert in.
