    This month, Te Pou Theatre, the home of Māori theatre in Auckland, has been celebrating 10 years of Kōanga Festival — an annual event that has encouraged and developed many Māori and Indigenous playwrights since it was first launched in 2014. Aroha Awarau was at the first Kōanga. As a playwright who has written and produced three plays, and had two plays created and “birthed” during the Kōanga Festival, the support I received from Te Pou as a Māori writer came at the perfect time.

Last week the Tūhoe teenager made her big screen debut in new Māori-led film Ka Whawhai Tonu, alongside Temuera Morrison, Cliff Curtis and Miriama Smith. Ka Whawhai Tonu is a te reo Māori film inspired by the battle of Ōrākau, a conflict that took place in the Waikato region 160 years ago during a nationwide confiscation of Māori land.
