That’s one reason why owner Juanita Incontro decided to open the salon. She got the idea from her sister Claudia Delgado Aguero, who had tried to offer sensory-accessible haircuts at other salons. But she was always eventually asked to leave since her clients were considered disruptive. “We noticed that there wasn't a space, a safe space for her that she could run her business out of, for any of her clients that have sensory needs,” Incontro said.

A children’s mental health service organization is presenting a training for Spanish-speaking families with young children. The training, put on by Ad Astra Behavioral Analytic Services, is for parents and will focus on ABA, or applied behavior analysis, as a means of helping children form better communication skills, school readiness and an awareness of school safety. Esmeralda León is a Lead Community Liaison Specialist with Ad Astra and will be hosting the training session.

Mandy Haase-Thomas, the museum’s Chief Operating Officer, said the goal with the sensory friendly hours was to make the museum accessible and welcoming for all of the community. “Play is so, so important for cognitive, for physical, for social connection,” Haase-Thomas said. “So in offering these sensory times, we're able to continue to welcome in and be an accessible place for children in our community.”She added the sensory friendly hours are not just for the children.
