    The Swiss tradition of marksmanship was established during the old Swiss Confederacy in the 15th century, when festival participants used crossbows in shooting contests. The legend of William Tell recalls this tradition. In 2025 a Cantonal Shooting Festival will be held in the southern canton of Ticino over three consecutive weekends in July. Seven shooting associations in Alto Ticino will hold competitions in rifle and pistol shooting.

    What appears to be an unprecedented case of doing double duty began in Washington on January 20 when Patricia (Patty) Collins was named Acting Treasurer of the United States. The treasurer has multiple functions, including liaison with the Federal Reserve, and direct oversight over the U.S. Mint, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and Fort Knox. Ms. Collins is also the director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing since March 24, 2024.

    When United States paper money prices first got hot a few decades ago—after long languishing as nothing but the sad pastime of “ragpickers”—speculation was that collectors finally realized that compared to U.S. coins of similar rarity, paper money was a bargain.     The Hungarian Mint has issued a new 50,000 forint in its Hungarian ‘Gold Florins from the Middle Ages’ program that began in 2012. The new coin, the eighth in the series, called the ‘Gold Florin of Ladislaus V,’ is offered in a single and in a piedfort version which is four times the weight of a normal coin. In line with the tradition of recent issues, a non-ferrous metal version of the 50,000-forint precious metal coins will also be issued with a face value of 3,000 forints.

    Employees of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China in Kunming, capital of the southwestern province of Yunnan, have set an example of customer service that will be hard for the bank’s competitors to emulate. At least half a dozen Chinese media sources tell the story of how on June 28, a woman named Zhang entered the bank with 32,000 yuan (or $4,500) worth of severely shredded bank notes.
