NHS England has announced it is accepting applications from pharmacists for fully funded places on independent prescribing courses with start dates in the coming academic year. Courses are being offered at 27 universities, with start dates ranging from June 2025 to March 2026 and a number of universities accepting cohorts over multiple start dates. Course lengths differ depending on the provider. P3pharmacy understands that a total of 3,300 funded places are available.

Over 5 million patients have used Pharmacy First since it launched in early 2024, NHS England has said. Breaking down how different elements of the service are being used, NHSE – which has not come close to spending the money set aside for the service – said around 2.4 million members of the public have gone through common condition clinical pathways, with acute sore throat (835,679 consultations) and uncomplicated UTIs (665,409) the most frequently accessed.

Locum pharmacists have reported a 10 per cent drop in their average rates since 2021 and a significant year-on-year reduction in the number of shifts available each week, the Pharmacists’ Defence Association has said. Commenting last week on its recent survey of over 1,300 locum pharmacists, the PDA said the findings reveal that hourly rates have plummeted to as low as £17 in Northern Ireland, £18 in the English Midlands and £19 in London.

A pair of pharmacists turned entrepreneurs from Northern Ireland have developed a pharmacy consultation app they say could save the NHS £1.7bn per year through “promoting smarter use of OTC medicines” and reducing pressure in the health system. Neil Sharpe of Donaghcloney and Stephen Toland of Derry have launched a beta-phase version of the app, which is named ConsultTed, in a number of pharmacies in Northern Ireland with a “full roll out” across the island of Ireland slated for August this year.
