‘February Story’ by Harry Threapleton tells the story of a student dealing with loss, insecurity, masculinity and the pressures of student life in the ‘God-forsaken month’ of February. Life is dreary, cold, stressful and lonely, and the only hope lies in the mysterious ‘fate-cubes’ which reveal inklings of the truth and what is to come, yet what Patrick can control in a spiral of disaster after disaster is frustratingly limited, and we are quickly surprised by a series of unexpected twists.

The best way to describe DULOG’s ‘Crazy for You’ is simply joyous from beginning to end. This classic, hilarious and memorable musical will have you smiling from beginning to end without fail. Celebrating 75 years of the musical theatre group’s outstanding legacy as an integral part of Durham Student Theatre, the show certainly does not disappoint. Telling the story of finding community through theatre and putting on a show, the show itself is a theatrical celebration.

I don’t like Doctor Faustus. Having studied the text in my first year, I found it to be stuffy, boring and confusing. Durham University Classical Theatre’s recent rendition, however, is everything but these traits: a tour-de-force of energy, organised chaos, beautiful design, and fantastic direction and characterisation. The cast and crew behind this production took my expectations for the show, and ripped them up, ultimately creating one of the best shows I have seen within Durham Student Theatre.

Durham has one of the richest student theatre scenes in the country, with over 30 theatre companies putting on more than 90 shows a year. There is something for everyone, whether it be classical theatre, musicals, immersive drama or comedy. It can seem overwhelming, but once broken down, Durham Student Theatre (DST) is worth getting involved in, even simply by going to watch.

Maariya Khalid’s ‘milk teeth’ is a poignant, intense, and heartbreakingly beautiful sucker-punch to the heart. It begins with central character Zenab, a young woman fresh out of a relationship, asking the audience to take care of a plastic baby for her, and over the next hour explores in sweeping and intelligent fashion the likes of motherhood, grief, coping mechanisms, support systems, and love in all its forms.

Max Shanagher’s ‘Incremental’ follows Marcus as he repeats a day in his life in an antique shop, gradually becoming more desperate as he seeks an end to a seemingly unescapable loop. In this first half of the Assembly Rooms’ student-written double bill, the deceptively mundane meets the absurd to create a piece of theatre that is a meditation on free will, agency and shattering conformity in an often-captivating way.

DosDos is what it says on the tin; this tale of two makes you laugh, tense, and mutter to yourself “they really need to break up”. The play’s light-hearted opening was successfully comedically executed, in its presentation of a guided meditation that descended into chaos. Maariya Khalid, playing Joni, immediately captured the audience’s attention in her varied facial expressions, with her virtual gathering interrupted in Dex’s (Horatio Holloway’s) attention-grabbing entrance.

The annual DULOG Gala Production is back and filled with more enthusiasm than ever. The hours of commitment this show takes is immense, and with a budget as big as you can get in student theatre, I had huge expectations. On the whole, the quality of the performing in ‘Anything Goes’ was incredible; the sleek choreography, and luscious harmonies were worthy of a west end stage. At times, the production value was let down by minor but recurring tech errors, but the show overall was fantastic.
