Hundreds of Rotary members from across the United States and internationally were given a warm hug of western hospitality on June 19, as they disembarked from their flights for the Rotary International Convention. Greeters from Tourism Calgary welcomed the Rotarians, dressed in the iconic Calgary white hat emblazoned with the Rotary logo, while a trio of stages set up throughout the airport had local musicians playing.

Calgary’s first hotel opening of 2025 also happens to be a major milestone, with the first completed office-to-hotel building conversion in the city’s history. Element by Westin, which now occupies the 833 – 4 Avenue SW location in the heart of the downtown west end, was once home to Mount Royal College. Now, the education will be in Calgary’s western hospitality, along with the economic benefits that come with an additional 226 modern hotel suites that will also accommodate long-stay guests.

Situated on intersection lights across the city are hundreds of cameras that track in real time the traffic patterns, but what Calgarians might not know about is the drones in the sky, and the VR in the control centre putting all of that data to use. Calgary has been leading the way on using low-cost, off-the-shelf technologies, along with in-house developed artificial intelligence, to make roads a little easier to navigate.

Community engagement is set to begin at the end of the month on a trio of Calgary Transit Park and Ride sites to begin exploring transforming the parking lots into housing. Fish Creek-Lacombe, Dalhousie and Anderson Park and Ride lots were identified by the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) as locations for transit-oriented communities (TOC). All of those locations are on Calgary Transit’s Red Line.
