Peace seems to have broken out between India and China. On Oct. 23, 2024, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese leader Xi Jinping had their first bilateral meeting since 2019. Statements from the foreign ministries of both countries declared a “resolution of issues that arose in 2020,” referring to the crisis that began when Chinese troops launched a number of incursions across the Line of Actual Control — the disputed border between the two countries — in Ladakh.

With expanding national interests, India has stronger compulsions to act against far-off hazards. India finds its interests entangled in disputes on the far edges of Asia, including in Taiwan. China claims Taiwan as its own, and is feverishly preparing to seize the island by force if necessary, while the U.S. has increasingly clearly signaled that it would probably fight to defend Taiwan. India is highly unlikely to fight in a conflict over Taiwan.

Last summer, U.S. authorities became aware of a plot, hatched by a foreign power, to kill an American citizen on American soil. The plot, involving a cast of spies, drug dealers, hit men and informants, was ultimately foiled. But, as gripping as the story was, the most interesting part was Washington’s reaction. If this had been another foreign country trying to assassinate Americans in New York, the U.S. government would have unequivocally condemned it, maybe slapped sanctions on the country.
