Asadullah Raisani is currently serving as a research officer at the Balochistan Think Tank Network (BTTN) in Quetta. He is an MS scholar in international relations at the Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering, and Management Sciences (BUITEMS), Quetta. He has authored multiple publications in both English and Urdu, addressing the socio-political and economic issues of Balochistan, the Middle East, and the broader Asian region.

I recently had an interaction with an elderly man in his 60s who had just had a dispute settled through the Jirga System. When I asked him why he chose to resolve the issue through the Muchhi or Jirga and not the judiciary, he said, “I do not have haram (illegitimate) money to waste in courts and kechehries, nor do I have Noah’s age to wait for the verdict to come.” A joyful laughter followed the statement, and everyone sitting in the room laughed to his loudest.

I was 11 (in 2007) when I first time heard my father saying, “He is a [Afghan] refugee,” while pointing toward a boy. The boy seemed of my age and a local Pashtun had hired him to wash his dishes and serve plain potato rice to his customers. The cart was located near the Russian Market at Masjid Road, Quetta. I did not bother to ask my father what a refugee is. I heard this term many times over the years.
