According to a city councilman for Cairo, the mayor resigned to take on the interim city manager position. The qualifying for the special election starts on Monday, April 7, at 8:30 a.m. and lasts until Wednesday, April 9, at 4:30 p.m. at City Hall, on 111 North Broad Street. The Qualifying fee for the election is $244.76.

FORT GAINES, Ga. (WALB) - The city of Fort Gaines no longer has a police department because of issues with the city’s budget and the department’s staffing. Many rural departments in South Georgia are facing this issue. “It became a salary issue, a compensation issue relative to the budget.” said Mayor of Fort Gaines, Kenneth Sumpter. According to Mayor Sumpter, the city also had issues staffing the police force — a problem many rural areas in South Georgia face.
