I was fortunate to have two weeks off which was very nice after playing four weeks in a row, which included the Women’s Scottish Open and the Women’s Open at St Andrews in August. Scotland was crazy!I’ve never had two weeks in a row like that where we didn’t have one day where it didn’t blow 30-40km/h. And it was gusting 50km/h at times on the Saturday at St Andrews. I like tough conditions but to have two weeks of it was something else.

The Olympic Games were amazing. It was one of the best weeks of my golfing career, it was unreal!My caddie Tanya and I stayed in the Village for the first two nights, to experience it. It was an hour from the course so it would have made for very long days if we’d stayed there the whole time. I didn’t get my clubs until Tuesday afternoon. I flew from West Palm to Philly, where we were supposed to have a three-hour connection which turned into nine hours. We only got to Paris late on Sunday afternoon.

I came back to South Africa for 10 days after the Women’s PGA Championship where I had another interesting experience. I kicked my toe on the corner of the bed at 4:30am while getting ready for the first round because I was second off that day. I heard it and it just went sideways; I knew straight away that it was either dislocated or broken … hoping it was ‘only’ dislocated. I got to the course and saw the physios.

South Africa’s No 1-ranked ladies golfer again takes us into her world and gives us insight into the life of a Major champion. We had quite the week at the US Women’s Open. I’ve been dealing with a few things off the course. My back flared up the week before, it went into spasm and I couldn’t move for five days. So I didn’t practise until the Tuesday before the tournament started, I could just do the bare minimum.

The past few months have been great for women’s golf – it is definitely being put on the radar with Nelly Korda being compared to Scottie Scheffler. I think for a spectator it must be exciting to be watching her dominate the game. It’s not like her dominance or women’s golf have come out of the blue, though. We’re here, we’re front and centre. I think the men in particular have had blinkers on when it comes to what we do, what we achieve and how hard we work.

Dave and I were fortunate to go to Augusta last year for the first time; we went on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The size of the property is incredible. It’s mind-blowing how you just walk for miles and miles and miles to get anywhere. That and the fact that nothing is out of place is quite something, and the grounds are just beautiful. The holes are good for watching, too, because they run next to each other.

I’ve been using the first part of the year as my real off-season to practise, prepare and train, because I travelled so much last year. This year is going to be really busy because of all the travel, and then you throw in the Olympics, which mean we’ll have two trips back and forth to Europe. My team and I have never done it this way but by the time I got to the US Open in June last year, I was exhausted, and that’s when we really want to start peaking.

I had a busy off-season which still involved lots of travel. We spent two weeks in Australia after my Australian Open win and had so much fun. We took a trip up the north coast of New South Wales, about two hours from Sydney, where we spent the week with family and good friends of ours we used to play with on Tour. After that, we headed back to Sydney to spend a little more time there so we could catch up with friends we hadn’t seen while I was playing the Australian Open.

The Olympics will be taking place in Paris this year, and I’ll definitely be going. Touch wood, as long as I’m not injured, I think it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that I’ll be playing, because the top-two ranked players in the world from each country go. At the moment, in early January, it will be myself and Paula Reto. I’m fortunate to be a tier-one athlete on the Sascoc Opex programme. GolfRSA is involved and is doing all the admin on our behalf. Thank goodness, because it’s a lot.

Winning the Women’s Australian Open again was a nice full stop to my year. Playing on two golf courses makes it a long week because you’ve got to get practice rounds in on both courses. They are both very good and quite different to each other. We only played one round on The Lakes Course and The Australian is probably one of the top-10 courses I’ve played in my career. It was in immaculate condition with slick greens.
