    The final day of Street Machine Summernats 37 turned up the heat in more ways than one. The scorching sun sent temperatures soaring on the burnout pad for the Open-class finals and Ultimate Redemption Round, creating brutal conditions for drivers and plenty of carnage, much to the delight of the diehard fans in the grandstands. Proceedings were opened by Summernats icon Chris Christou in HO 775. On Saturday night, Chris was inducted into the John Petersen Burnout Hall of Fame.

    Mother Nature has wreaked havoc on the car events calendar lately, so we were relieved to spot blue skies peeking through the clouds at the annual Harrigans Rod & Custom Show on Sunday 16 October. Around 450 cars cruised out to the water’s edge at Harrigan’s Drift Inn in Calypso Bay, midway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, to enjoy South-East Queensland’s largest one-day automotive show, now in its 14th year.

    We happened upon Jayden Gray’s beautiful, nitrous-huffing ’68 Camaro at Northern Nats back in May, and we knew we had to find out more. We tracked Jayden down for a chat about the car and his time on the tools putting it together. First published in the August 2024 issue of Street MachineIt’s a 1968 SS Camaro running a 406ci Dart small-block Chev with a transbraked Powerglide. It’s mini-tubbed and still sits on leaf springs in the rear.

It was my first burnout in the car, so there was lots of pressure and nerves, but we did three skids over the event and won second place in the Six-Cylinder class.
