On Saturday, Jan. 21st, the Canadian government has agreed to pay 2.8 billion dollars to settle a lawsuit brought on by 325 Indigenous groups seeking compensation for the loss of language, culture and identity caused by residential schools. The money will be paid to a non-profit trust independent of the government, meaning Indigenous groups will have full-access to the funds without government interference.
