Connor Douglas Ferguson takes a new approach musically with his latest single “Fresh Hell,” produced by Alex Newport. He trades in his usual indie folk compositions for something more rock. Musically, the song doesn’t immediately come off as grunge as it is. The intro melody of the guitar almost has a bit of country twang rock to it, so the listener may not expect the sudden dive into the heavier grunge melody that kicks in. His low vocals also drive the rawness that many fans of the genre look for.

Dublin-based band Inhaler releases “A Question of You,” their third single off their upcoming album Open Wide set to be released February 7th. The track’s upbeat tempo and tone is a new sound for the band, which is as expected considering the last two singles of the upcoming album have been new territory sonically. There’s an underlying pop sound to their usual indie rock/alternative discography.

London-based musician Hero. has released his newest single “REDWOOD” straight out of a dream pop lover’s fantasy. The song includes everything from groovy percussion to slow rhythmic synth that ties in just a touch of R&B. The musical composition of the track blends multiple genres into a two-minute song. The synth plays at the alternative sound but the slower punchy drum melody really drives the R&B/dream pop sound we’ve seen emerging over the last two years.

Twin brother duo MC4D has released their newest single, adding to their folktronica releases for the year. Their new single “Travel On” is truly refreshing amongst the genre with a unique blend of sounds. This new take on blending country and EDM goes to show the level of artistry the duo has. All of this said, the single is a taste of what we can expect as they are set to announce a new tour early next year. The strengths of the song are its melody and instrumental composition.

This Nashville singer-songwriter is emerging with new singles in Music City. Drew Schueler just released his newest single “It’s Cool,” after having won the NSAI song contest. His songwriting skills are apparent enough but being able to blend meaningful lyrics into commercial pop is commendable. The mellow, bright melody is the perfect amount of modern pop, as it doesn’t lean heavily into radio pop. Musically, it’s not what you’d expect when you hear pop music.
