BHUBANESWAR: International drug syndicates appear to be targeting Odisha as entry point to smuggle hydroponic weed, a highly potent variety of ganja, using mules as would the back-to-back seizures from Biju Patnaik International Airport suggest. In all cases, the carriers have been found to be Indians with tourist visa. On Tuesday, Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate arrested a Kerala native and seized about 4 kg hydroponic weed worth a whopping Rs 4 crore.

BHUBANESWAR: In an effort to intensify vigil on anti-social elements and manage traffic congestion, Odisha police have planned to install artificial intelligence (AI)-based CCTV system across the town and along National Highway-316. A survey has been launched to identify the areas where the CCTV cameras equipped with facial recognition and number plate reading technology will be installed. Most of the CCTV cameras in Puri were damaged due to extremely severe cyclone Fani in 2019, sources said.

BHUBANESWAR:Trailing the financials of Hansita Abhilipsa and Anil Mohanty, the Income Tax department has stumbled upon a startling transaction of Rs 120 crore between a ‘corporate entity’ and the accused. Preliminary probe suggests Hansita and three other suspects used to liaison for the entity since the last three years for business development. “Out of the total transactions, it has been ascertained that Rs 65 crore was untaxed,” said I-T department sources.

BHUBANESWAR: A group of four to five miscreants hacked a man to death near the busy Rasulgarh Square on Wednesday morning. The incident took place amidst heightened security measures across the state capital which is hosting the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. As per the eyewitnesses, the assailants arrived on at least two motorcycles and started attacking a man near Rasulgarh over the bridge at about 8 am. BHUBANESWAR/MAYURBHANJ: A 32-year-old man who ‘plotted’ his fake abduction to extort Rs 50 lakh from his parental uncle was allegedly murdered by his accomplice over sharing of the ransom money in a bizarre twist of events in Mayurbhanj district. The deceased was identified as Chandan Kumar Swain of Kendrapara’s Hindulia. Swain, police said, was allegedly murdered by his friend Ashish Singh (22) of Mayurbhanj’s Jambani village.
Four new jails, support for mental health of inmates in the offing

BHUBANESWAR: The Directorate of Prisons has planned to set up four new jails in Odisha to handle overcrowding of inmates. As part of the expansion plan, it will establish three jails to accommodate 500 inmates each at Bhoipali in Sambalpur, Jajpur and Bhadrak. Currently, the jails in Jajpur and Bhadrak have a capacity to house 133 and 201 inmates respectively.
