An incendiary war has been raging for more than a year in the Middle East. It has been indescribably devastating on Gaza and has now extended to the West Bank, to northern Israel and Lebanon, with ominous signs of expanding further into a regional war. This is a war driven by an Israeli government bent on exacting vengeful retribution on all of its perceived enemies, unrestrained by its American benefactor and main purveyor of weapons.

Hamas was formed in the late 1980s as an armed wing of the Gaza branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. The Brotherhood, a transnational Islamist organization founded in Egypt in 1928, had a small organized presence in Palestine since at least the 1940s. From Gaza, it later spread to the West Bank and nearby places of the Palestinian diaspora, notably Lebanon.

China’s actions are presented as belligerent and unjustified, driven by misplaced fears about an encircling West bent on blocking its rise. By contrast, the US government and its allies are unquestionably presumed well-intentioned and fair-minded, benevolently working “towards an international community characterized by cooperation, not division and confrontation” (EU President von der Leyen).

Not a day passes without a China-related news item, typically an ominous one. This focus on Chinese matters is perhaps understandable, given China’s sheer size with a population larger than the North American and European populations combined, but it often veers into alarmist and largely fabricated frenzy about an imagined Chinese threat.
