The star of the game was Leonie Fiebich as she had the best game of her WNBA career and had the Barclays Center on their feetBarclays Center is absolutely rocking this afternoon as the NY Liberty have the lead over the Atlanta Dream.

We are officially in the home stretch of the WNBA regular season! With the playoffs beginning on September 22, teams are looking to iron things out before the big dance. Seeds need to be clinched, matchups need to be set, and everyone is hoping to be at full strength. And for the New York Liberty, this final stretch gives them one more opportunity to make a statement before the playoffs begin. At 27-6, the Liberty are the best team in the WNBA.

Following up on a great season is difficult. For the New York Liberty and Kayla Thornton, it’s a challenge they are prepared for. Thornton joined the Liberty in the winter of 2022 in the trade that brought Jonquel Jones to Brooklyn. Before her on-court debut, she promised to bring a “dawg mentality“ to the Liberty team. In year one, fans saw that in action as she was critical to many of the franchise-record 32 victories.

Supporting the community has been a big goal of the Brooklyn Nets, and fans saw it in action again last month. On April 24, the Nets held a basketball camp for kids in the Brooklyn area. As part of Brooklyn Basketball, the Nets and New York Liberty work to give back to the community. Nets forward Cam Johnson, who has been an active part of the Brooklyn community, led the camp. A camp attendee, Able Burrell, spoke to PIX 11 about the clinic.

On April 13, the New York Liberty, Wellfare and the Hospital for Special Surgery held a food giveaway at the Fulton Houses in the Chelsea section of Manhattan. It was a rainy day, but that did not stop the fun and enthusiasm from residents and staff members there. Betnijah-Laney Hamilton joined and took time to talk with members of the community as she handed out boxes. Also attending was the CEO of Wellfare, Cole Riley. He took some time from his work to chat with The Local W.

The New York Liberty have made community a key part of their mission. Whether it is in the five boroughs or across the world, the team has sought to build bridges and create welcoming environments. That community was on display on April 13 when the team partnered with Wellfare and the Hospital for Special Surgery to hand out food to residents of the Fulton Houses in Manhattan. It was a rainy day, but that did not stop the team as thousands of dollars worth of food was handed out.
