Chancellor Rachel Reeves set aside £11.8 billion in the budget to compensate those affected by the infected blood scandal. It follows The Sunday Times’ “Bloody Disgrace” campaign, calling for a full and fair settlement for the victims of the tragedy, which won the support of more than 250 MPs and peers, as well as the daughter of the late Body Shop founder, Dame Anita Roddick, who was one of thousands of victims to lose their lives.

Novak Djokovic has warned that grassroots tennis is “endangered” by the rise of more accessible options such as padel. Padel is easier to master and is already played by 200,000 amateurs in the UK. It is also more profitable for tennis clubs. The sport is played as a doubles game on walled courts that are half the size of tennis courts. A padel ball is similar to that used for tennis but it can be hit off the walls. No overarm serve is involved.

The Times had many journalists and photographers on the ground during the 1944 invasion of Normandy. They were assigned to file stories from the war zone to appease the editor but they had to abide by strict censorship rules. The Allied Expeditionary Force employed officials known as field press censors, who reviewed journalists’ work in situ before it was transmitted back to the newsroom.

The war correspondent John Prince was working as a journalist for The Times assigned to cover the Merchant Navy in 1944 before he was transferred to Normandy a month after the D-Day landings. It was 1975 when The Sunday Times published the story of a young boy with haemophilia who faced life in a wheelchair.
