The extension of free primary school books for school children from September is a great boost for families across the Midlands-North West, Fine Gael MEP Maria Walsh has said. Athlone Gymnastics Club will host its Annual General Meeting (AGM ) in the Athlone Springs Hotel on Tuesday, June 11, at 7.30pm. All parents/guardians of children currently attending classes with the club are welcome to attend. Local Fine Gael councillor, John Dolan, has welcomed the provision of a new ride-on lawnmower for the residents of Brawny enabling continued maintenance of the green area. “I assisted with the reformation of a new resident’s group in the Brawny estate last year following a long period with no group in situ. Following the formation of this group, I secured a commitment from the council to supply a new ride-on lawnmower for the residents to maintain the large grass area in the estate.

Local Fianna Fáil Deput, Robert Troy, has called for the school bus driver age limit to be reviewed in a bid to tackle shortage of drivers. Deputy Troy said the upper age of limit of 70 years for drivers of school buses needs to be examined given people over 70s are permitted to drive for private operators. The School Transport Scheme is a managed by Bus Éireann on behalf of the Department of Education at a cost of about €382 million per year.
