Part of the wreckage of a plane that crashed in water near Mount Martha and killed two people last weekend has been discovered. Water police and search and rescue officers lifted a “large part of the aircraft” out of the water on Saturday morning and have transported it to Port Melbourne for further investigations. The fuselage discovered is about 4m wide and weighs about a tonne. Any human remains will be recovered from the wreckage before it is examined further.

A family who lost their unborn child in a collision say their “unshakeable bond” and community’s support has helped them through a “tragic” period. Andrew and Elodie Aldridge lost their unborn son, who was due to be born on December 2, in a multi-vehicle collision at Old Dookie and Boundary roads in Shepparton last week. Ms Aldridge, who was 34 weeks pregnant, has since undergone several surgeries at the Royal Melbourne hospital where she has made “good progress” since the tragic event.

Gippsland communities on bushfire alert at the weekend have shifted their focus to flood preparations, with heavy wind and rainfall predicted in the coming days. Winds of up to 100km/hr are expected to flow through Victoria’s central and eastern ranges by Wednesday morning, while some areas in Gippsland could see up to 100m of rain by Thursday. A severe weather forecast for damaging wind gusts was issued for the central and eastern ranges on Tuesday.
