Elon Musk is planning to build an entire town to offer below market rents to his employees. The new town is close to Austin, Texas where three of his companies, Boring, Tesla and SpaceX, have operations. Although company towns are not common today, Musk is not the first entrepreneur to realize that his ability to attract talent is tied to affordable housing.

The median Los Angeles home sold for $849,000 last year, according to the National Assn. of Realtors. Meanwhile, one of California’s signature zoning reforms of the past few years, Senate Bill 9, appears to be having at best a desultory effect on new housing supply, the shortage of which is driving prices upward. Los Angeles and other California metropolises need abundant housing to become affordable, and they can get it only by empowering private developers to build significant projects.

The recent layoff announcements at Google, Amazon, and Microsoft impacting a total of 40,000 employees have many worried about the job market. Ever since April of last year, I’ve seen an explosion in headlines about layoffs and warnings about the labor market being weaker than it appears. One recent headline asked “Are we on the verge of a tsunami of layoffs?” But these headlines don’t align with what I, as a recruiter, am experiencing on-the-ground or even official labor market statistics.
