It’s no secret that Michigan’s has a job problem. With a 45th in the nation unemployment rate and pitiful job growth relative to its population, the state needs change, desperately. After years of trying to bury everyone’s head in the sand following a brief spurt of positive media attention where, among other things, CNBC bizarrely Michigan a top state for doing business, Governor Whitmer has finally come around.

When Governor Kathy Hochul postponed the infamous congestion pricing program, she cited a “a fear of unintended consequences for New Yorkers.”. Between the sudden, last minute decision to pause the program and now, it’s unclear what has changed, but Hochul seems to believe something did. Just a week ago, she unleashed the policy to the public despite its nearly 70% disapproval rate. There are numerous reasons why a congestion tax is a bad idea, which ATR has written about extensively.

On January 1st, HB 2404, the single largest income tax cut Hawaii has ever seen went into effect, providing sorely needed relief for one of the country’s most economically harmful income tax systems. This bill was the culmination of years of efforts from the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, whose work on HB 2404 got them the “biggest win for freedom” award from the State Policy Network (SPN).

Earlier this week, Michigan Democrat’s introduced House Bill 6217, legislation that would raise the corporate tax rate from 6 to 8.5%. Beginning next year, Michigan may have one of the highest corporate rates in the nation.
