Montreal’s Baraka Books will begin explicitly highlighting the Quebec and Canadian origin of their books in September. A sticker bearing the words “Published & Printed in Canada,” illustrated with a maple leaf and fleur-de-lys, will be printed on the copyright page of each new title. The plan is also to sticker the covers of books sent out from the publisher’s office, and Baraka Books is considering having all their books stickered at their Canadian distributor.

The Book Publishers Association of Alberta (BPAA) has announced the 2025 shortlists for the annual Alberta Book Publishing Awards. The awards, which encompass trade and academic publishing, and include design awards, celebrate the best in Alberta publishing in 12 categories. The winners will be announced at a gala reception in Calgary on Sept. 18.

Science Writers and Communicators of Canada announced the shortlists for the 2024 SWCC Book Awards last week at the association’s 2025 conference in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The prizes recognize outstanding contributions to science writing by Canadians in general and youth categories. A third award, the Paradigm Prize, recognizes underrepresented perspectives in science writing, for which the winner is selected from among the finalists for the two main categories.

Glad Day Bookshop is on the move again and changing its bookstore operations to a non-profit status. Toronto’s Glad Day, now in its 55th year, is the world’s the oldest queer bookstore. In 2016, after decades in its location on Yonge Street, the store faced a steep drop in sales and moved into the heart of Toronto’s gay village to ground-floor retail space that also included a kitchen and bar.

The Doug Wright Awards for the best in Canadian comics were handed out in Toronto, in conjunction with the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, on June 7. The winners in each category receive a small cash prize, with the winner of The Nipper additionally receiving a week-long retreat at the Valleyview Artist Retreat, in Caledon, Ontario.
