About 150 people rallied with the Indiana Graduate Workers Coalition Thursday at the Sample Gates after the federal government revoked visas for Indiana University international students. The coalition, a union representing IU graduate student workers, confirmed on social media Wednesday some members lost their visas. The protesters demanded IU administrators, such as President Pamela Whitten, do more to protect international students.

Indiana University Provost Rahul Shrivastav highlighted growing campus progress amid uncertainty in higher education during his State of the Campus address Tuesday. Shrivastav said the core of Bloomington’s future is the “relentless pursuit of academic excellence,” and IU will keep the strengths of current programs while evolving them to meet the demands of a changing world.

Indiana University Bloomington Faculty Council members passed a resolution Tuesday calling on Big Ten colleges to join against political attacks and pool resources. Following a similar resolution passed at Rutgers University, the council wants to establish a Mutual Academic Defense Compact in the Big Ten Academic Alliance. The resolution calls on university leaders to initiate the compact.

IU provost Rahul Shrivastav said Tuesday that a "small number" of student visas have been revoked by the Trump administration. Speaking to the Bloomington Faculty Council, Shrivastav said the students' academic units and faculty have been supporting the students. Hannah Buxbaum, IU vice president of international affairs, said last week the administration and immigration authorities don’t notify schools when they revoke the visas.

Indiana University announced Tuesday a $75 million expansion of engineering programs on the Bloomington campus. IU will invest in new degree programs, at least 10 faculty and facilities in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering, according to a university release. The university will offer computer engineering, robotics, bioengineering, microelectronics and electrical engineering programs.
