While Catholics around the world celebrated the selection of a new pope Thursday, some are cashing out. The conclave of 133 cardinals selected Cardinal Robert Prevost. The first American pope, he’ll go by Pope Leo XIV. Vatican experts and oddsmakers didn’t select Prevost as their frontrunner to lead the Catholic Church. Forbesreported some betters were blessed with payouts totaling more than $50,000.

An Indiana University student is suing Indiana’s secretary of state and election commission to allow voting with student IDs issued by public colleges. IU sophomore Josh Montagne, joined by non-partisan advocacy organizations Count US IN and Women4Change, filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court. The three are suing Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales and the Indiana Election Commission over Indiana’s newly enacted ban against using student IDs to vote.

Pleas and criticism grow as Gov. Mike Braun has full control over the Indiana University Board of Trustees, but one voice has been silent. Republican lawmakers added a provision just before passing the state budget late in the session, giving Braun the power to remove alumni-elected trustees and select their replacements. Before Braun signed the budget into law, alumni had elected three of nine trustees since 1891.

An Indiana University Board of Trustee candidate sued Gov. Mike Braun over late changes to the state budget that gave him full control over trustee seats. After signing Indiana’s budget into law, Braun can remove trustees elected by IU alumni and appoint their replacements at any time. Alumni used to elect three of the nine IU trustees, but the university confirmed the upcoming Board of Trustees election is cancelled.

About 35 Indiana University faculty accepted a payout for early retirement so long as they don’t disparage or defame IU. The Voluntary Faculty Retirement Incentive Program offer was available to faculty older than 65. Most faculty will retire by May 31, according to a contract obtained by WFIU/WTIU. An IU spokesperson said it is standard language for separation agreements for cash payouts.
