Within Dell Medical School, Dr. William Matsui has many roles. He is the vice dean of research and a professor of oncology and internal medicine. Within his area of expertise, he subspecializes in cancers of the blood and bone marrow. Since 2018, Dr. Matsui has been part of UT’s efforts to find new treatments to eradicate cancer. The need is urgent — in 2022 there were an estimated 1.9 million new cancer diagnoses in the US and more than 600,000 cancer-related deaths.

by Michael AgrestaOne weekend in 1952, not long after Gene Walker, M.S. ’55, had transferred from Rice University to The University of Texas at Austin to complete his undergraduate studies in engineering, he went to San Antonio on a double date. At the last minute, the foursome in the car grew to a fivesome when a friend of his buddy’s date asked for a ride to visit her family for the weekend. As soon as the newcomer entered the car, she captured Gene’s attention — at the expense of his date.

He depended on his dad for rides from school to the family home outside Earth, a tiny town about 40 miles northwest of Lubbock with a population of just over 1,000. Mark remembers waiting in the car — sometimes for hours — while his father worked overtime making house calls.

In 1964, 67 passionate former members of the Longhorn Band (LHB) organized the Longhorn Alumni Band (LHAB) to support the Showband of the Southwest and its legacy. During their early meetings, the group passed a hat to create an informal scholarship fund. By the ’80s, the group wanted to develop a more sustainable plan, including permanent funding for scholarships, so in 1988 they created The Longhorn Alumni Band Charitable Fund.
