    On April 25, Knippa High School sent 25 students to compete at the University Interscholastic League regional academic meet at Blinn College in Brenham and placed first overall as a team with 16 students advancing to state competition. James Miller placed first in number sense, calculator, mathematics, science, physics, and second in chemistry. Victor Ortiz placed second in number sense, mathematics, science, and fourth in calculator.

    Ninety-two boys and 72 girls competed at the regional 1A golf tournament held in Manor on Monday, April 14 and Tuesday, April 15. Knippa students James Miller and Sophia Suarez both achieved a personal best. Miller finished the tournament as the boy’s regional champion. He posted scores of 78 and 77 for a two day total of 155. Sophia Suarez finished 17th out of 72, posting scores of 108 and 107 for a two day total of 215.

    The Knippa Rockcrusher varsity tennis team won second place April 11 in Sonora. Standout performances included McKenzie Speer and Madison Speer, who earned first place in girls doubles, and Cameron Santos, who clinched the top spot in boys singles. The Rockcrushers are looking ahead to the district tournament, set April 21-22. Senior SpotlightDaniel Lira enrolled at Knippa Independent School District in second grade.

    Remember the movie “Throw Momma from the Train.”  I know, I am dating myself. This is a 1987 movie with Danny DeVito and Billy Crystal. DeVito’s character states he has a coin collection. He shows the coins to Crystal’s character, and they are just normal 1980s quarters, dimes, pennies, and nickels. The coins were received in “change” when he was with his father, who passed away, which made the coin collection special.

    The Knippa Independent School District’s Rockcrushers kept up a tradition of excellence March 26 and were victorious in the District 31-A University Interscholastic League academic competition. Knippa finished first overall as a team with 577.5 points, followed by Nueces Canyon, 214; Medina, 178.5; Rocksprings, 122; D’Hanis, 121; Comstock, 120; Leakey, 94; and Utopia, 50. The journalism team and the speaking team finished second overall.
