Seeing the smiles on the children’s faces as they scanned each aisle looking for their favorite shirts, pants, shoes and toys for Christmas was a sight I won’t forget. Although I was covering Shop with a Cop for the newspaper, I had committed to volunteering with the program. I spent the evening at the Raceland Fire Department as elected officials and volunteers served hot turkey dinners to hundreds of people.

I am telling you, if you would have seen the look on my face when the skeleton was mentioned. Looking back at who would be the most entertaining interview is hard to pick because there were so many, but the owner of Luna Corvus Oddities and Broken Drum Records probably deserves the title. The random merchandise in the store had already left me puzzled, but when Shadow Skaggs, who has a way with words as he described the items inside his store, brought up the skeleton I was done.

If only you could have seen me trying to inject myself into the police escort that was leading the Buffalo Soldiers and Troopers to the C.B. Nuckolls Black History Museum. I started out awaiting the arrival of the troopers with a fellow Ashland police officer on the grounds of the Toyota car lot, but it turned out the soldiers weren’t stopping as planned. As the patrolman exited onto Winchester Avenue with lights flashing, I was tempted to follow behind, but I refrained from doing so.

What began as a joyful start came crashing down to a chaotic ending. Before the race to hunt the eggs began, adults were all over the grounds at Central Park, opening the eggs, taking what was inside and throwing them back down. It truly was a sight to see. While following the crowd to their destinations for each age range, children were supposed to wait until an Easter-related song called “Bunny Hop” sounded throughout the air to begin snatching the colorful eggs. Not all followed the instruction.

It’s not a normal week in the newsroom at The Daily Independent if the dispatch scanner doesn’t sound at least three calls a week pertaining to Scope Towers. Every week, calls come across detailing an individual trapped in an elevator to fire alarms caused by smoke from burned food and melted plastic. What began as a joke inside the newsroom transformed into an idea of a story to tell.

If you know me, I cannot resist when it comes to an animal, especially a dog. I heard first-hand how much Lee Ward enjoyed this assignment and it keeps putting a smile on my face. She detailed the importance of a service dog for a boy suffering with behavioral issues and shined a light on just how great dogs can be. Ward was able to captivate how the dog, Rotelli, had already begun making a difference in the life of Aiden Adkins — something I feel so strongly about.

ASHLAND Mother’s Day will never be the same for a group of mothers all sharing a tragic loss of a child. Just before the holiday for honoring mothers, a group of people in Central Park gathered for the 11th Annual Butterfly Release, during which mothers who have lost infants and toddlers banded together. They told their stories in remembrance of their baby boy or girl. Bridgette J. Henry has organized the butterfly release for three years.

Despite a rough 2024 season for Battle football and the program's fans, there has been one consistent bright spot to look out for on the field: No. 9. Senior do-it-all athlete Chris Brown has made his presence known across multiple positions for the Spartans this year, lining up at running back, linebacker and even defensive end. A four-year varsity starter, Brown is use to his multi-positional role, and he has embraced it.
