While a student in Bible college, I was preaching at a little church in Altoona, Kansas. (I won’t blame you for not knowing where that is.) During Sunday school, there was a brief song service and time to share prayer requests. In addition to the planned hymn singing, each week there was an opportunity to request a hymn.

This month at Community Christian Church, we began a sermon series called “Victorious!” that goes through the book of Revelation. As we dive in, there is a strange idea that often grows out of studying the book of Revelation that I want to clear up. OK, there are a lot of strange ideas that have come from students of Revelation! However, this one appears only three verses into the Revelation.

Last month, we noticed some “Faith Supplements” that 2 Peter 1:5-7 lists that build upon our solid foundation in Christ. Rather than selling the quick fix of erasing a bad diet with just a scoop of powder, a pill, or gummy vitamin, Peter calls us to “make every effort” in this work. These faith supplements uproot what is ineffective or unfruitful in us. Last month, we talked about virtue, which is the first supplement listed.

I know I should be eating more fruits and vegetables. But where’s the fun in that? And who wants to haul around sacks of oranges, elaborately construct tasty salads and make sure they’re consumed shortly after purchase? Even if heavily processed foods meet our needs of convenience and taste, we might still feel the void of their nutrient scarcity. Luckily, there’s a solution! Why eat fruits and vegetables in their natural form when we can take a supplement? That’s right.
