Students gathered in Red Square for a protest held by WWU Divest Apartheid on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m., Many embraced each other, as they listened to speakers recite speeches, poems and information regarding the movement’s actions and calls for financial clarity against the Western Washington University administration. The protest then marched to Old Main, with chants calling for President Sabah Randhawa and other board members to divest from Israeli institutions.

Western Academic Workers United has established a strike deadline for Educational Student Employees on May 21. The union held a town hall on Tuesday to discuss and answer questions regarding a future strike. The deadline, announced on Tuesday, sets a date for student workers to strike if Western Washington University admin does not agree to the 37-proposal contract put forward by the union.

Western Academic Workers United is voting to authorize a strike after months of fruitless bargaining with Western Washington University. Voting began Monday and is expected to end Friday at 5 p.m.WAWU’s online referendum comes as weekly negotiations with Western admin enter the eighth month, in which the union has been advocating for higher wages, increased job security and tuition and fee waivers, among other demands listed on the WAWU website.

Members of Western Academic Workers United voted in favor of a strike authorization for educational student employees. The online voting among the union’s nearly 1,100 students passed with 93% voting “yes,” from Monday to Thursday. The vote passing does not mean a strike is imminent. Instead, it allows the 18 members of WAWU’s bargaining committee to set a deadline for the university to meet their demands.

Ongoing repairs to the sewer lines in the Fairhaven Complex finally have an end in sight. The comprehensive plan is expected to be finished this summer, according to Western Washington University construction coordinator, Andy Hanson. In November, fetid smells emanated from a sewage leak that was later discovered to have originated from around Fairhaven’s stack three, as reported by The Front.
