As a cold front approaches WNY Wednesday a threat for severe weather increases. There are a couple reasons the Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight risk for severe weather across WNY Wednesday. First, timing is everything and WNY will be smack dab in prime-time heating of the day which makes the environment hot and humid and that is what storms love to thrive on (instability). Also, a front is approaching so there will be lift - think of it as a way to make the air rise.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Two weeks into the month of May in Western New York can offer up all sorts of conditions weather-wise. Specifically, I'm talking about Mother's Day, and in the past, the Buffalo Airport has recorded everything from 80-degree temperatures to freezing temperatures to rain to sun and even snow!Looking back through the past 44 years, going back to 1980 gives a bit of an understanding of what this day typically looks like.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — I have to say April somewhat surprised me to be in the top 10 warmest on record. So much so I had to check it multiple times. Then I made a TikTok (watch above) about what I found out! Being here you get to see all the data up close and even visit the sites to peek around for yourself! Sometimes I get lost in the numbers, I like numbers, I like math, I love that you always get an answer with math! So, here we are getting answers about the month of April with numbers.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — As severe thunderstorms crossed northern Ohio Wednesday evening, I took some time to talk about how meteorologists use radar when looking for tornadic activity. Of course, everyone can look at a radar screen and see rain and even thunderstorms if lightning is on their app but to an untrained eye, it mainly looks like a blob of various colors. You also might know that the darker the orange or deeper red is heavier rain while the lighter yellow and green are lighter showers.

Ever hear, "we have a 30% chance of rain today?"Some think it's how much of an area will receive rain, as an example, only 30% of all of WNY will have rain. Or that it'll rain 30% of the time for that location. What it actually means is:The chance of precipitation is the percentage any one given location will receive rain within a certain amount of time. For example, Buffalo has a 30% chance of rain today. This means there is a 30% chance Buffalo will have rain during the day.
