    1. IntroductionDespite national differences, religious education predominantly follows three models: absence of religious instruction, confessional, and nonconfessional education (Gearon 2014). This essay concentrates on the second model, particularly in the context of confessional Islamic education. In doing so, following Grimmitt’s (2000) typology of religious education, this essay does not engage with the informational and academic approach to education about religion.

    ‘Second Israel’ is the key to modern Israeli politics not just to Netanyahu’s victory in 2022. These Israelis, largely made up of the country’s Mizrachi Jews, suffered discrimination historically, are religiously more traditional, earn less, enjoy inferior education compared with the establishment and reside in second-tier Israeli cities, underprivileged neighborhoods, and the under-served communities of Israel’s geographic periphery.
