PUTRAJAYA – Former Malaysian prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has been named as a suspect in a graft case involving RM700 million (S$212 million) spent on government publicity during his 14-month tenure. Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki announced at a press conference on March 3 that his investigators will call in Datuk Seri Ismail for questioning on March 5.

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s plan to review a controversial law that allows for suspects to be detained for up to 28 days without trial has been welcomed by civil society groups, but some say the law should be repealed entirely. The Security Offences (Special Measures) Act, commonly referred to as Sosma, was enacted in 2012 to tackle serious threats to national security and public order, but it has also long been criticised as “draconian” with periodic calls for its repeal.

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia is set to ease rules covering peaceful rallies in the country, after the government drew flak for investigating protesters at a recent anti-graft rally in Kuala Lumpur . Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim told Parliament on Feb 13 that the government will table an amendment to the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and remove Section 11, which stipulates that rally organisers must obtain permission from premise owners before any rallies can take place at the owners’ venues.
