BOSTON (WHDH) - Former Boston City Councilor Frank Baker is launching a comeback campaign — running for an at-large council seat. Baker officially filed his paperwork to run Thursday afternoon. He represented most of Dorchester and parts of South Boston for 12 years before declining to seek reelection in 2023. The former councilor, a registered Democrat, was a rare conservative voice on the council during his tenure. Baker said that many Boston residents urged him to run again.

The air traffic controllers directing planes into the Newark, New Jersey, airport lost their radar Friday morning for the second time in two weeks. The Federal Aviation Administration said the radar at the facility in Philadelphia that directs planes in and out of Newark airport went black for 90 seconds at 3:55 a.m. Friday. That’s similar to what happened on April 28.

PEMBROKE, N.H. (WHDH) - Police are investigating after a woman and child were fatally shot early Friday morning in Pembroke, N.H., officials said. At around 1 a.m., officers responded to a home in Pembroke for a 911 call, according to the Pembroke Police Department. Upon arrival, police met with the 911 caller and found both a woman and a child suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, the department said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

BOSTON (WHDH) - Students at a Catholic elementary school in Dorchester not only witnessed the election of a new pope, but also got to learn how a conclave works. Third-graders at Saint John Paul II in Boston conducted their own class conclave, with a March Madness twist. “This morning we did a ‘Sweet Sistine,’ where we did a bracket-style of all of the top candidates,” said teacher Bridget Crane.

BRAINTREE, MASS. (WHDH) - Archbishop of Boston Richard Henning spoke Thursday about Pope Leo XIV being elected to serve as the leader of the Catholic Church. Henning spoke to members of the media in Braintree, saying Leo addressed the world with a “beautiful appeal to all of us to seek that peace that comes from Christ and to live that peace with one another in compassion.” He said he gives thanks for this “gift” to the church.
