Strokes are traditionally known to affect the elderly, but recent research shows a concerning trend of an increasing number of younger adults experiencing strokes. In July, at the peak of South Africa’s winter, Bafana Ntombela (56) was in the sitting room of his home in Pimville in Soweto. It was very cold Friday morning and he switched on a two-plate stove, which was on the floor, to keep his feet warm. Ntombela doesn’t recall what happened next. It seems that he had passed out and fell on the stove, it took a couple of minutes for him to be found. A colleague, and Ntombela’s son were greeted by a smell coming from the sitting room.

Bodies responsible for the registration of health professionals in the country say they welcome engagements with any stakeholders, including government leaders. This comes after the MEC for Health in the Free State, Viceroy Mahlatsi, committed to “facilitate ministerial engagements with HPCSA, Pharmacy Council and SANC to find a way of approving membership of those who studied abroad”.

Patients at Mahikeng Provincial Hospital in the North West have criticised it for allegedly failing to provide adequate optometry services. Some of the patients claim the facility gave them the wrong prescription spectacles, which allegedly worsened their conditions. Others say they have been waiting for their spectacles for years. One of the patients is a grade 12 learner, Gomolemo More, whose academic performance has been negatively affected by her vision problem.
