The story is about two cops patrolling a small town, and the many things they encounter over the course of one night. But slowly, we become aware that some of these many things may be linked to a crime. The rest of this review may contain spoilers. Shahi Kabir is the screenwriter of Joseph, Officer on Duty, and the excellent Nayattu. As director, we got Ela Veezha Poonchira, and now we have Ronth. All these films are stories about the police, and not just in the investigative sense.

The story is about a group of youngsters from very humble backgrounds who want to set the stage on fire in the Michael Jackson era. As always in Malayalam cinema, the way this simple story is told is fantastic. The rest of this review may contain spoilers. In an early scene in Moonwalk, a young woman tells a young man to watch out for her Bharatanatyam performance at the college culturals. The scene could be set anywhere. It unfolds in a chemistry lab.

The concept is solid: a man keeps trying to avoid death, and death keeps coming at him in every direction. But despite strong filmmaking, the narrative remains emotionally aloof. The rest of this review may contain spoilers. Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan have repeatedly stressed that their reunion after Nayakan has nothing to do with that earlier film. They are right. There are a few images, a few touches that reminded me of Nayakan.
