Throughout the years, I have been inspired by the explosion of local redbud trees (all wild, mind you) to collect redbud blossoms and create something to eat in my kitchen. Before this spring, I made redbud jelly, shortbread and pound cake. You can read all about those experiences here. This year, I remembered how much I enjoyed making blackberry syrup one summer, adding it to a margarita instead of traditional lime juice.

Have you ever seen a photo of a geological sedimentary wonder and thought to yourself, “Someday, I’m going to go there and stand on that rock?” That’s exactly how I felt about Hawksbill Crag in Arkansas. And, it did not disappoint. Hawksbill Crag, found off the Whitaker Point Trail, is a sandstone overhang that resembles a hawk’s head – complete with bill. It overlooks the Ozark National Forest, from the Upper Buffalo Wilderness area. It’s located about 25 miles southwest of Jasper.

Gun Storage Week, sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, is a national campaign that encourages all gun owners to check their firearm storage practices, and take action to make sure their firearms are safely secured. It takes place twice a year – June 1 to 7 and September 1 to 7.

The Boone and Crockett Club is prepping for its 32nd Big Game Awards, which will take place in Springfield, Missouri, from July 24 to 26, 2025. In advance of the event, the Boone and Crockett Club hosted a Media Summit and Judges Panel, where 27 official measurers, along with support staff and media, spent time in Springfield recently.

It’s an event I’ve wanted to attend ever since I heard about it – the National Pheasant Fest and Quail Classic. Hosted by Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever, this year’s gathering took place at the Kansas City Convention Center. Along with the seminars, exhibitors and bird dogs with their “humans” everywhere, the event also offered a brunch for women, titled “Women on the Wing.” This affiliate program began in 2018 in response to the burgeoning interest of women in the world of upland hunting.
