Alma Dickerson Williams, PhD, of Refugio, will be inducted into the Texas State University 2024 Athletics Hall of Honor on Friday, Nov. 22, based on her stellar performance as a member of the track & field team from 1983-87. This is the highest honor bestowed on Texas State (formerly Southwest Texas State University) athletics alumni. The honor recognizes the former athlete’s accomplishments in both their collegiate and professional careers as well as their impact on Bobcat athletics.

The Refugio-Woodsboro Yard Sale Trail, held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 was deemed a success by organizer William Lampert. A total of 30 simultaneous yard sales were held in Refugio and Woodsboro, a first of its kind for the area. There were 23 sales in Refugio and 7 in Woodsboro.

The annual Jaso Feast for Humanity will be held in the Refugio City Hall Clubroom on Saturday, Nov. 16, with serving beginning at 11 a.m. The annual meal, dine in or carry out, will be available for elderly or disabled citizens of Refugio County. Those who will need a plate delivered should call City Hall at 361-526-5361 to have their name added to the delivery list. The event, originally called “Feast for Humanity” was instituted by the late Rey Jaso during his tenure as Mayor of Refugio.

Thirty-four years ago Dale Tucker began his stint at the First Baptist Church of Refugio as an assistant to the janitor at that time. Tucker shared that he applied for the position at the recommendation of former Refugio resident Ben Jones. When the janitor passed, Tucker assumed the position of maintenance man and janitor.

The Refugio Methodist Church, 310 Power St, Refugio, will hold its annual bazaar from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19. Various types of craft items will be available for purchase. The pantry section will offer pies, cakes, cookies and more. There will also be a silent auction (throughout the day) and the traditional quilt raffle. Something new this year will be free games/activities for the younger children including a fishing game, ring toss and face painting.

Delma Caballero and Laurie Puente, longtime employees of Karnes County National Bank, Karnes City, have a combined total of nearly 60 years of experience. Caballero will observe her 40th anniversary with the bank in January of 2025, and Puente will reach the 20-year mark in November. Caballero began her career at KCNB in 1985, working in the bookkeeping department and as a teller.

Karen King began her career in the retail grocery business in 1980 as a bagger at the former Ressman Grocery store in Goliad. Throughout the next four decades she saw the store be sold to Pal’s Foods, Super S and lastly Lowe’s Market. But, King remained a constant, working her way up to the position of store manager more than 30 years ago. In that position, her main responsibilities are to, “oversee employees, order groceries and customer service.” The store currently employs 20-25 people.
