Decision day is here, Avon Lake residents. School officials learn today, Wednesday, May 28, if the slim margin by which an all-important bond issue that passed on Election Day will hold up. Issue 16, an $88 million, 37-year bond issue to fund the construction of a new middle school and repairs to three elementary schools, was officially approved by 20 votes, according to a recount completed by the Lorain County Board of Elections.

Earlier this month, Mayor Kevin Corcoran led a public forum to unveil the creation of another major project, “Gateway North Ridgeville,” a multi-year project to reconfigure the city’s Lorain Road and Lear Nagle Road corridors.

At its Monday work session, City Council heard about the administration’s proposal to buy the Board of Education/Village School building on Detroit Road and transform it into a new City Hall. The proposal would have the city purchase the property, which includes the 101-year-old building and the land on approximately 3.26 acres at 36600 Detroit Road for $1.7 million in “as is” condition and pending due diligence inspections. No timeline is described in the proposed ordinance.

Sixteen votes, the margin by which Avon Lake City School’s $88 million construction bond issue passed on May 6, is the only uncertain note from an Election Day that was a clean sweep for each local issue and the one state issue on the ballot. Avon Lake schools Issue 16, a proposal to fund a new middle school building and upgrades to its elementary schools (Eastview, Redwood and Westview) passed with a preliminary count of 3,497 yes votes and 3,481 no votes.

After four eventful years as Superintendent of Avon Local Schools, Ben Hodge is leaving to become Assistant Superintendent of Polaris Career Center, a technical-career education organization in Middleburg Heights. According to Hodge and the president of the school board, it was Hodge’s own choice to leave. The board held a special meeting and executive session on May 5, where Hodge and the five-member board discussed his decision to leave after his contract ends July 31.

Lorain County Metro Parks Director James Ziemnik and Avon city officials will set aside golf clubs for ribbon-cutters on Thursday, May 8, for the official opening of a huge tract of wetlands where nine holes Bob-O-Links golf course had once been. The opening of the 48-acre Upper French Creek Wetlands will be an addition to the Metro Parks’ Miller Nature Preserve, which also added the Avon Wetlands, a nearly 60-acre park with trails, three years ago.

Every so often, an issue will galvanize a group of Avon Lake citizens who will take the time to attend one or more City Council meetings to voice their opinions. Last week’s public hearing over the rezoning of a property near one of the city’s busiest intersections for a proposed townhomes development was one of those occasions.
