Dr. Marolda, former director of naval history (acting) at the Naval Historical Center (now the Naval History and Heritage Command), is the author/editor of numerous books, including most recently The Brown Water War at 50: A Retrospective on the Coastal and Riverine Conflict in Vietnam (Naval Institute Press, 2023; coeditor—see book review, p. 57) and Admirals Under Fire: The US Navy and the Vietnam War (Texas Tech University Press, 2021).

The American arsenal of democracy delivered a huge number and variety of bombers during World War II. Among them were Boeing’s B-17 Flying Fortress and B-29 Superfortress; Consolidated’s B-24 Liberator series; North American’s B-25 Mitchell; and Martin’s B-26 Marauder. Excepting the B-29, all flew against every Axis power, from the Pacific and Aleutians to North Africa and Europe.

But while we still enjoy the company of perhaps 150,000 Americans who served in World War II, they include veterans of June 6, 1944, and the scores of D-Days that preceded and followed the Normandy invasion. We can still appreciate their sacrifice and their service. For a moment, let’s consider what those veterans meant to America and the world. Let’s ponder what their victory accomplished -- and what it did not.
