Drogheda United returned to the top of the Premier Division as goals from Warren Davis and Darragh Markey sealed an altogether comfortable win over Waterford at Sullivan & Lambe Park. The result hardly seemed in doubt once Davis had put United in control on the stroke of half time. Keith Long’s team offered virtually no threat whatsoever in the 95 minutes of play. DROGHEDA UNITED’S Warren Davis celebrated his birthday this week with yet another goal to send Kevin Doherty’s team back to the summit. His goal on the stroke of half-time put United deservedly in front. When Darragh Markey doubled their lead in the second half, the result was never in doubt.

ED McGINTY was the Shamrock Rovers hero deep into injury time as Drogheda United’s unbeaten start to the season was ended at the last. The keeper sprung to his right to keep out Shane Farrell’s 96th-minute penalty and preserve the points. The ex-Sligo man had himself been guilty of barging into Luke Heeney, leading ref David Dunne to point to the spot. So Stephen Bradley’s Hoops had to hold on as Drogs pressed to level the game late on but they now have back-to-back wins.
