Heads were still turning more than a day later about a historic round. Of the three courses that host the Lowell City Golf Tournament, the most challenging one is Vesper Country Club. The Tyngsboro layout has dashed many a dream since the tournament began in 1923, whether it hosted the first round, second round or third and final round. But on Wednesday, the 100th edition of the Cities saw a spectacular first-round performance from Tyngsboro native and Western Kentucky standout Trevor Drew.

On Friday, July 6, 1923, at Vesper Country Club in Tyngsboro, Marshall W. Forrest Jr. was applauded when he won the inaugural Lowell City Golf Tournament. The three-day tournament began with rounds at two Lowell clubs, Mt. Pleasant first and then Long Meadow, before Vesper hosted the finale. Forrest, a member at Mt. Pleasant, won by 11 shots over clubmate Charles Mills. Things seemed to have gone well. But the question wasn't really who would win.

Some 50 feet outside the arena, a group of River Hawk players, 8-10 or so, enjoyed a beautiful late afternoon day.

Remarkable. Eye-popping. Otherworldly. It's tough to be hyperbolic about the run UMass Lowell goaltender commit Austin Elliott went on after joining the London Knights early in the 2024-25 season. Elliott ended a magical campaign Sunday night when he backboned the Ontario Hockey League champions to a 4-1 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers to lift London to its third Memorial Cup title in Rimouski, Quebec. Elliott will arrive in Lowell later this summer to prepare for UML's 2025-26 campaign.
