The ultimate science case for observing Earth-like planets orbiting stars in their habitable zone requires image contrast in visible light on the order of at short orbits from the host star. To address this goal, a leading approach combines high-performance coronagraphy and wavefront shaping to reduce starlight and generate a dark region within the image, enhancing the exoplanet signal to noise. Coronagraphs are designed to suppress diffracted light but require exquisite image quality.

In this paper, we study numerically the temporal evolution of an initially random large-scale velocity field governed by the hyperviscous incompressible Navier-Stoke equations. Three stages are clearly observed during the evolution. First, the initial condition development is characterized by a spectrum evolving in a self-similar way with a wave number front k*(t) propagating toward high values exponentially in time.
